He was one of the biggest box-office attractions of the late 1980s and early 1990s. He starred in sword-and-sorcery films such as Conan the Barbarian 1982 and later graduated to large-scale budget action movies such as Terminator 1984, Predator 1987, Terminator II 1991, and True Lies 1994. Schwarzenegger began his career as a body-builder and won numerous medals including the 1969 Mr Universe competition. He came to the attention of Hollywood in Pumping Iron 1976, a documentary about body-building. He was cast in a series of roles which made much of his physique and little of his character, thus overcoming fears over the apparent obstacle of his Austrian accent. The power of his onscreen personality soon enabled him to play a variety of roles, including comic roles in Twins 1988 and Kindergarten Cop 1991.
